Bus to Fanal Forest Madeira: Routes & Timetables | Madeira Bus

Fanal Forest

The Fanal forest is one of the oldest and most mystical places in Madeira. Home to ancient laurel trees (Til trees) that are over 500 years old, this UNESCO-protected laurisilva (laurel forest) is a photographer's and nature lover's paradise, especially when the characteristic low-lying fog rolls through.

How to Get to Fanal by Bus

Fanal is located in the remote highlands of the Paul da Serra plateau, making it challenging to reach by public transport. There is no direct public bus service to Fanal. The most practical approach is to combine bus travel with a taxi or organized tour.

⚠️ Limited Public Transport: Unlike most Madeira destinations, Fanal is not served by scheduled bus routes. Plan ahead and consider taxi transfers from Rabaçal or Porto Moniz.

Best Time to Visit

Early Morning: The legendary mist that makes Fanal so photogenic typically occurs in the early morning hours. Arrive before 10 AM for the best chances of atmospheric fog.

Year-Round Destination: Unlike coastal areas, Fanal's high-altitude forest is beautiful all year. However, dress warmly – temperatures can be 10°C cooler than in Funchal.

Highlights

Ancient Til Trees: Some of the twisted, moss-covered laurel trees here are estimated to be over 500 years old. Their gnarled branches create an otherworldly "enchanted forest" atmosphere.

UNESCO Laurisilva: Fanal is part of Madeira's UNESCO World Heritage-listed laurisilva – a type of subtropical rainforest that once covered much of southern Europe millions of years ago.

PR13 Vereda do Fanal: A circular hiking trail (~10.8 km, moderate difficulty) takes you through the heart of the forest. The trail fee is €3 for non-residents (2025).
